Varieties Of Dilemmas

Suvy caught her first chipmunk this week. I do have mixed feelings about this, because I love all small, furry animals. On the other hand, I do want Suvy to learn survival skills in case she outlives myself and my mom.
On the investment front, Microsoft has been attempting to buy Yahoo for a couple of months now. Yahoo has been rejecting all of Microsoft’s offers as being too low. MSFT had a 48 hour discussion with YHOO over Thursday and Friday, but has not announced the outcome of the discussion. I sold my YHOO stock for a modest profit yesterday for fear that the deal might not consumate and that my YHOO stock would drastically go down in value. Millions of other investors have been sweating bullets over this corporate drama.
Yesterday I cut the grass and stirred up some kind of pollen that aggravated an attack of hay fever. It took three doses of Benadryl last night to turn off the water works in my sinuses. I am now experiencing a Benadryl hangover that is rather yucky. After typing this, I am going to purchase a new decongestant that I have never tried before. The name begins with a Z. Is it Zytrix ? I hope that is has fewer side effects than Benadryl or Mr. Albert Hoffman’s cold remedy from the 1950s. Mr. Hoffman died this past week in Switzerland.
May God rest his soul.

  1. I think it’s going to be very difficult for Microsoft to just walk away from Yahoo. Software distribution is going web/java based, and Microsoft knows it. It also needs a developed Google clone with a brand name for it to really get into the game.

On the other hand, Yahoo has been holding out for a deleriously large amount of money, given how mediocre their management has been for these last years. Google’s been eating their lunch and the shareholders know it. So look for Microsoft to make an end-run and try a hostile takeover, which I’d bet a number of shareholders would support.

At least that’s my take, but it’s a high-stakes game.

  2. As of 8:45 pm on Saturday, May 3rd, Microsoft has withdrawn its offer to buy Yahoo. I don’t know how much credibility to give to Fox News but they are reporting this at this moment. Just go to http://www.foxbusiness.com to see the story, complete with a copy of the e-mail from Steve Ballmer to Jerry Yang.

  3. That’s it for now, but I suspect it’s not the end.
People are yapping about them buying AOL now, but I think they’ll try to appeal to the Yahoo Shareholders first.

Microsoft is facing the beginning of the end of traditional software distribution, and they will desparately need a Google-like portal. That’s the bottom line here, not so much revenue from advertisements per se, though that’s clearly an important part of the model. So even if it’s not Yahoo, it’ll have to be something similar, though Yahoo seems the only real contender in this space.
