Into The Wild

My most recent diary entry was about rebelling without hating the entity that you are rebelling against. Today’s entry is about hating the object of your rebellion. Last night, I saw the movie ‘ Into The Wild. ” This movie is about an Emory University student who rejects materialism. Since I attended Emory for one year and have, at times, rejected materialism, I was attracted to this movie. This movie turned out to be a lot more disturbing that I anticipated.
The parents of this student, in this re-enactment of a true story, are portrayed as the type of parents who are well endowed with money, yet retarded in the quality of love. They throw money at both of their children while being emotionally unavailable to them, unless you are talking about the emotions of anger, criticism and insecurity. I hope that this movie is an exaggeration of the truth, because the actors portraying the parents took the position of refusing to love their children as a non-negotiable position, regardless of how badly the children begged for love and eventually demanded it; an unbelievably enraging and horrific attitude for any parent to take. This combination of cold, manipulative money baiting, along with the lack of love and affection caused the student to feel totally divorced from the truth. His strategy to correct the situation was to give his money to charity and to hitch hike to Alaska, eathing edible herbs and reading transcendental literature. He ends up dying in Alaska withour having contact with his family for a couple of years.
It takes a lot of character to give up the money that your unloving parents give you and to die doing it, but I myself would suggest another available option in dealing with it. Rebelling against your unloving parents is an example of letting your Reactive Self control your life. It amounts to allowing your hatred to drive you into misery and death. There lots of entities that can do this to you : family members, employers, organized religions, political parties and races.
Another strategy to resolve this hatred is to willfully forgive those who trespass againt you. At that moment of forgiveness, you can then start a new life that is not driven by a type of hatred that can be destructive. At the moment of forgiveness, you can Intend to begin a new Creation in your life and focus your Attention on the new person that you have become. The new person can be as constructive and positive is you wish. Later, if an even better type of person comes to mind, you can create that person as well in yet another Rebirth of your own life. You can recreate yourself as often as you like, even several time a day if you need to, all without letting your own personal hatred kill you or anybody else.

Into the wild,

  1. Cowboy -

Get the book that the movie was based upon. An amazing read, and incredibly thought-provoking. Have not seen the movie yet, but intend to ASAP. (Alas, movie options here in the swamp seem to be limited to Pixar, slasher flix, and things that blow up real good.)

But anyway, read the book, it was really powerful. We had it on a multi-family beach vacation several years ago, and everyone read it. The conversations it triggered were way intense.

  3. Good post. It’s not easy to avoid getting bogged down in what you were or have become, but it’s inspiring to hear this stated as a simple choice.
