Devon Allman and Honeytribe

Last night Devon Allman and his band Honeytribe performed here in Thomaston. Devon is the son of Greg Allman and the nephew of Duane Allman. I was curious about this Allman offspring as I had never heard any of his music before. I don’t know if he is a regional or national recording act. Anyway, at the club last night, Devon was walking around among the audience members before the show. He is a young man in his twenties who looks a lot like his father and his uncle. He has long, blond hair; a beard; and fair skin. The audience mobbed him ! People were asking him to autograph CDs, their clothing, even their skin. And I’m not just talking about young people either; there were middle aged people all over him; asking him to pose for snapshots. This went on for about an hour. Devon has the public relations thing down ! He graciously complied with every request and made a lot of people happy. Although I was interested in what he sounded like, I was rather suprised to see that he was such a celebrity simply because of his pedigree.  His bandmembers climbed onstage one by one with the slightly jaded look of well traveled players. They were not so jaded that they didn’t have stage presence however; they made a point of playing well and looking like they were into the music, regardless of their physical, mental, emotional state. They keyboard player used an organ sound and even had a leslie speaker on stage. The second guitar player played slide guitar and dual leads with a semi-solid body guitar. Devon came out and played either a Les Paul or a reasonable facsimile.

I would think that the obvious question that you are asking is ” Did he sing like Greg Allman and play guitar like Duane Allman ? “  I am going to have to ask you to acquire a recording of his music to see for yourself. Either that or to actually see him perform live. I don’t want to spoil your own sense of suspense and curiosity. I will say that he did a remarkable job of performing after scattering his energy all over the club beforehand. I do think that he has a well deserved future in the music business and I wish him well.

Rock on,

I.C.
