Most changes appear to be totally transparent, however, if you experience any issues either reading or posting your blog, please let me know!

Another update is likely forthcoming in the next month which will rectify several nagging issues and allow me to do some things with this area that I’ve wanted to do a long time.

In the meantime, contact me with issues, it’s likely to be an easy solution so don’t worry. :)

As of this writing, we are in the process of yet again, another server move.

Our last server move was only a few months ago, but alas, things are truly not working out with what this hosting company can offer us right now.

After the server had been hacked the third time, I made a decision that we should probably move to a more secure hosting solution.

Within the next week as long as no delays or snags appear, we’ll be transparently on the new server.

There is still much to do, but suffice to say, since the databases are presently being downloaded, (saving the best for last, the blogs section, which weighs in at several hundred MB’s!), any further posts between now and the transition will be lost in the mix, including this one. And a word for our bloggers, be sure to save your posts locally that you do between now and then. Once the new system is up, you can feel free to backtrack in your posts so you don’t skip a beat. :)

When we relaunch at our new home, I plan on spinning up a few projects that have been delayed or put on hold due to the extra efforts needed just to keep the old server working at all.

Finally, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, and thank you for all of your consideration and words of encouragement even through the times when it seemed much easier to simply close the doors on KN. I’m certain our best days lay in the path ahead.

As many of you know, the server that houses these blogs and Krimson News was compromised several days ago, leading to an outage.

The resolution has been to move the entire site to a new, more secure server in an attempt to prevent further tampering.

That all said, there may indeed be a few issues since the reinstall has been completed due to the nature of what was done.

Please test out your blog as best you can, and report back to me in this thread, or via email, any issues that you encounter!

There does NOT appear to have been ANY data loss from the attack, it was purely an attack in order to misappropriate the resources of our server for illegal activity.Â

We are still experiencing issues related to the move, so expect downtime over the next few days. My advice for bloggers would be to write your posting before hand, and paste it in, to reduce the amount of time it takes for you to make your posting, as connectivity remains tenuous.

More soon!

Jeff

I just rolled out Wordpress MU version 1.3 to the server. Please let me know if you have any troubles!

Thank you!

-J

*** I received word that there was a formatting issue today. I was able to track down a forum posting which leads me to believe that the encoding for the database tables was modified in this new version. I was able to rectify the issue by hard coding a standard encoding for the site to interpret things at. The problem created though is that any posts done since the upgrade are now mis encoded. This is better than all posts prior to the upgrade being messed up, but still annoying.

Two options are available:

1)Â You can go back an edit your posts from yesterday.

or

2) I can attempt to resolve the issue by changing the encoding across the entire database via SQL, however, it will take some research, and I am uncertain when I’ll be able to do it. I’ve never tried to modify the encoding of fields before, but I don’t believe it could be “that” hard. :)

Sorry for the issue, it was literally out of my hands. I will do my best to make it right, but please note that there was nothing lost in the upgrade, just the way that the site interprets your posts was changed.

Please let me know if you notice further issues, and in the meantime, I’ll see about hard coding the database to be one encoding type, instead of two. ;)

More Later-

Jeff

Since we are currently using a beta build of the software, and there have been countless fixes generated since the intial installation, we have implemented the latest and greatest beta build of the backend software which runs this site. There are many undocumented feature enhancements and fixes which are in this update. One of them being an autosave feature apparently, as I noticed a periodic save notification has appeared at the bottom of this edit dialog. Neat!

I’ll have the “Latest Posts” feature turned back on in a few days. Something caused my heavily modified version of the plugin to go kablooey which subsequently killed the KN Blogs home page for a few hours this week. Disabling the code in the home page fixed things temporarily, but I intend to get it fixed soon.

This should not have affected any of your blogs.

But if it did, or if you have noticed any other problems, please shoot me an email at: mrcrimson@allcost.com

Thanks again to all of you who have signed up for a blog and been blogging. I appreciate each and every one of you, and I hope that you are enjoying/finding useful, this space we have created for you.

Best Regards-
