Bill Watrous and James Morrison play Flinstones

A trombone link sent to me by my dad.

If you’re not familiar with the institution that is known as Bill Watrous, he is a famous old studio trombonist. If you’re not familiar with jazz trombone, look at him cranking out the notes: There appears to be no correlation between the cranked-out notes and his slide placement. (In reality, of course, each slide position can generate several different notes, but these are part of an overtone series, not adjacent notes on a scale, so seeing someone play the trombone looks kinda strange if you didn’t grow up seeing it.)

whoa man! Bill Watrous is such a monster! His ability and technique are unparalleled - just incredible. As is James Morrison of course, the rediculous trumpet player in the video.

There are so many under rated and not so well remembered Tbone players other than Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller.

My dad is always talking about Bill Watrous, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, Christian Lindberg, Urbie Green, Stan Kenton, Carl Fontana and Dick Rosolino. He never stops talking trombone. Ever.

My dad played trombone in high school into his late 20’s, dropped it for 30+ years, and picked it up again in the last 5 or 6 years. He plays out with various jazz bands and small orchestras, mostly show tunes and old standards.

I myself played for about 4 or 5 years until high school when it wasn’t “cool” anymore. I still have a closet passion for old Chicago tunes like “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”. I had some of their songs written down on music sheets and used to play them. Probably part of the reason why I have such a strong emotional link to music to this day.

    Thanks for the link!
