On The Mend

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The family is now recovered from a series of ailments, or one ailment affecting three of us variously. And that’s enough of that.

Here we are earlier in the month:

My new camera arrived today, a Panasonic FZ-18. There is much to learn.

Strange Orphan Tale, Strange Orphan Coincidences

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

We have a friend who was orphaned at three and adopted at the age of five. He was raised by a loving family, with a sister who they also adopted. His adopted mother and father are both deceased. Yesterday I received an email from him saying “This was my father. He died in July, 2007″. It took me a minute to figure out what he was talking about. Then I realized, and sent him an email to find out what had happened. His mother and father never married, but had another son together after he was placed in the orphanage. He, and his brother (who he never knew about), and his father (who he will never meet) work, and are/were successful, in the same business. His mother is still alive, and living on the other side of the state, a two-hour drive away. His father retired in 2006 was living in the next town over for the year before he died. My friend went yesterday to visit his father’s grave, and will go with his daughter to meet their mother/grandmother, and possibly the brother, this weekend. They — the family — had been looking for him for twenty years. There is an extended family. There are more odd details, but apparently a documentary is already in progress, so I’ll stop there.

Hepatitis Vaccine Reaction

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Henry had his Hep A vaccination last Monday, the 12th, and since this saturday has been lethargic, with no appetite, and this morning at 1:30 had a bout of throwing up. His color is off. We have come to suspect that he is having a reaction to the vaccination, and a little online research tends to back this up.

Miserable Cold

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Ergh.

One nostril stays clogged all day, and I need to have multiple lie downs to make it stop. I’m hoping it isn’t a sinus infection, just some miserable rhinovirus. It’s been after me since Friday, so I’m ready for it to stop. In better news, one of my nostrils works.

Shaded Moon, Radiohead Live

Re: Radiohead

How bizarre and ironical that for me the magic occurred the night while watching them on television, while the stadium gig was, for everyone I have talked to — friends, wife, and next-door-neighbors — life-changing. “Gabba gabba we accept you, we accept you one of us!” I have no doubt about anyone’s experiencing, even my own. Next up, KC in Philly…

Radiohead, In Rainbows, From The Basement

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Tonight, despite my feeble objections, Susan and I watched “Radiohead, In Rainbows, From The Basement” on the DVR.

The kind of energy that was transmitted/liberated/experienced is of a kind I have not experienced since January 26-2005

The quality of the experience is unmistakable, waves of energy cascading through the organism, and even susceptible to memory, an opening in the emotional center. It continued throughout the broadcast, from the first song to the last, making the commercials interspersed (and fast-forwarded through) seem especially ridiculous. The surprise for me was to experience this coming from a source not previously identified.

The kicker: we are scheduled to see Radiohead perform live tomorrow evening in Palm Beach at an outdoor venue.

My feeble objections related to this fact. My objections are dismissed.

Henry’s Eighth Birthday

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

A friends and family birthday party on Hollywood Beach, with our favorite snaggle-toothed squirrel, Henry Stock. His actual birthday is tomorrow, his birth hour 7:30 a.m.:
