Emergence from Hell?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

My head, today, seems above water in my current spate of organism difficulties. The beast, the stomach, is less volatile, and I have begun to modify my eating to 1.)mollify it and 2.)take off some weight. My wife has managed to secure us an excellent, cheerful physician (verbally confirmed by her staff as such in contrast to others they have worked for), and she seems more than casually interested in her patients’ good health. She’s suggested a daily regimen of flax seed oil (a couple of tablespoons) to help with raising good cholesterol, so I’m on board that train.

As another diarist noted, we crossed the jahrzeit for the most excellent drummer/humorist Ian Wallace on the 22nd. One light year and six days into his journey. I hope he has a First Class seat.

Diarist has a ring that blogger does not. Blogging and flogging are too close. Words beginning with “diar” are also problematic, but less closely related associationally.

U23D

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

We took the kids, and met up with some friends at the IMAX Theatre in Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Science & Discovery yesterday for the 5:15 showing of U23D. To say that it sets a new standard for concert films is an underestimate. It sets a new standard for cinema in general, and presents a band who, especially now that they are presented in this light, far and away the most important popular music group since the Fab Four. It’s literally a literally stunning piece of work, and there’s no way to adequately describe the quality and intensity of the performances, the sound, and the visuals. As the 3D camera hovers over the drum riser, you see in vivid detail all of the little things that make a huge concert work, including what looks like a glass of iced tea. Watching the band work it becomes obvious the level of concentration it takes to be U2 in a live setting, and the end credits a testament to the number of individuals it takes to implement the experience. Five stars.

Qi Gong DVD

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Today I followed along (to say practiced would far overstate the situation) with a Qi Gong DVD that I have owned for some time but have never really investigated. It is a challenging set of exercises, but the pair on the screen have the benefit of a stunning mountain view. I envision myself working with this as a daily practice, to help balance my energies. As a plus, it rhymes with “tea”.

Radiohead tickets go on sale in the morning. We’re going.

Compare & Contrast

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

This morning during a somewhat mentally agitated sitting, I wondered what it would mean to consider oneself without comparison to any external standard, any ideal, any hero. Is it possible?

The stomach gradually settles down under the influence of medication. The absence of coffee, and the substitution of tea has changed my personality. I have also begin growing my hair out after seven years of close-to-a-shaved-head. This has led to the discovery that my thin head of hair wants to stand straight up, even at a significant length, and pomade has been introduced to the mix.

The Return of The Stomach

Friday, February 8th, 2008

After several (five?) years of calm, it seems as if my stomach has decided to go on the offensive. As a result, I am back on medication (Nexium) to effect some relief. I suspect I have a hiatal hernia, caused by being just too damn hefty. One positive result (turning a seeming disadvantage into an advantage) is a switch from coffee to tea, a switch which I am currently enjoying quite a bit.
