Merv…Merv…Merv

Phil Milstein’s “Probe” provides some solace.

Rhino Misery

On Thursday night I went to Impediments rehearsal, and noticed during our first break a particular sensation I have come to associate with one thing: impending illness. The entire organism feels a kind of intense irritation, an irrational tension that is inescapable. This has — in the past — led to some sort of emotional outburst, which allows the virus to enter. It is, I believe, the action of the virus itself creating an opening through which to enter. with stomach upsets it is often preceded by an intense desire to eat, where the food tastes uncommonly good. Instead of a traditional emotional outburst, we went back to rehearsal and worked on our cover of “Pretty Vacant”, one which I sing. Well, there you go. A wicked head cold took up residence in my sinuses afterwards, and the suffering goes on unabated here on Sunday morning at 10:06 a.m. The last two bouts of “cold” I have had have been more intense than previously remembered, I wonder whether a.) I’m getting old and/or b.) the virus is mutating and growing stronger. As with other illnesses there is always a window of opportunity to see something other than the daily round.

Two versions of a logo that floated around for a couple of days before I grabbed it. So far, no one in the band has gotten it. The Uranian viewpoint strikes again (the planetary influence, not “your anus”, smartypants):

The second one was an attempt to clarify the viewpoint.

Love Demonstrated

Authorities said both Flowers and Bassitt restrained the girl June 12, tying her to the back of a van with a piece of rope before dragging her on her stomach at the Love Demonstrated Ministries boot camp in Banquete, about 10 miles west of Corpus Christi.

So now he thinks he’s a teacher!

First things first: Impediments member Rob Budowsky announced to Susan (my wife, his bookkeeper) that his wife Stacy has got a surprise bun in the oven. This will be their third child, their current youngest being an eight-year-old, their oldest 12. Rob’s 40th birthday just went by, and we’re in the process of planning an Impediments gig to annoy all of our friends and celebrate Rob’s old age. Stacy is 38, and a great mom, but I think everyone is just going “wow…”. A big Mazel Tov to our friends!

On Monday and Tuesday I worked as a contractor for a company called ExecuTrain, teaching an Adobe InDesign Level 2 class to a group of four very cheerful and intelligent young women from a Miami architecture firm. I was nervous as hell on Sunday, but once I was in front of the students with the material, I was surprised at how much knowledge I had collected about using the application, and how happy they were to have this information. We deviated from the script — the supplied course manual — to better address the kinds of situations they were confronting in their work. The course manual was designed by three Indians, and some of the course materials reflected this in a humorous way, and the artwork was…whew. The facility was quite nice, and the company had a lovely coffee machine that made different varieties of hot joe from little packets you loaded in the front, and bagels for breakfast and cookies for snack. I hope to hear from them again!

Batman

What if you could film a version of Batman that fits this rendition of the TV theme song? I think it would be just great. This is one of my favorite recordings:
