Adult Content, Protest DeLuxe

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Christ, every day, Sally McDonough must have to prevent Laura from waking and baking, shooting her up with amitriptyline so she doesn’t run through the halls of the White House, naked and screaming, furiously masturbating with Abraham Lincoln’s walking stick.

Tomorrow, we’re going down to testify:

Protest runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

We will gather at the east entrance of the college at S.W. 100th St. and 107th Ave. (If you arrive later, proceed to 104th St.) We will then march along the west side of 107th Ave., around the corner to S.W. 104th St. (Killian Parkway). We will march to the main entrance of the college (by the marquee) on 104th St. and will be allowed to congregate on a portion of the grassy area (about 20 to 30 ft. deep) which runs from the main entrance heading west all the way to Perimeter Road. We can also be on the sidewalks of 107th Ave. and 104th St. as long as we do not block any pedestrians passing by.

We cannot park on college property. We can park on grassy swales of surrounding neighborhoods, such as the west side of S.W. 112th Ave. which stretches from 104th St. to 112th St. There are neighborhoods to the east of 107th Ave. where there are grassy swales, especially on 106th Ave. Many of these swales are at the side of the homes, rather than the front. One area with a swale is on the east side of 106th Ave. between 102nd St. and 103rd St. where you can’t see the homes. Don’t block anyone’s driveway. There are also swales in front of homes on estate size property to the north of the college on 95th St. and on 93rd St.

Bring water, sun screen, hats, signs (Impeach signs are great since Saturday is being observed as Impeachment Day in many other American cities). See www.A28.org. Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing. There will be Pro-Bush demonstrators, but the police will keep us in separate areas. Let’s show tolerance. After all, we are the patriots; they are the rubber stamps.

George McGovern on Bush, Cheney

The rest here

…In the war of my youth, World War II, I volunteered for military service at the age of 19 and flew 35 combat missions, winning the Distinguished Flying Cross as the pilot of a B-24 bomber. By contrast, in the war of his youth, the Vietnam War, Cheney got five deferments and has never seen a day of combat — a record matched by President Bush…

…It is my firm belief that the Cheney-Bush team has committed offenses that are worse than those that drove Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew and Atty. Gen. John Mitchell from office after 1972. Indeed, as their repeated violations of the Constitution and federal statutes, as well as their repudiation of international law, come under increased consideration, I expect to see Cheney and Bush forced to resign their offices before 2008 is over…

Dinner with Granny

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

We went to granny’s dining room at the Hyatt Residences on Park for dinner last night. The food was very good, and it was a good time for all. We had a walk around the beautiful and well-maintained grounds afterwards. This was an experience we all expressed a desire to repeat.

Gary Stewart, The Basement Tapes, Adele’s Broken Bones

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Susan and I were watching the tele this evening when I stopped by one of my favorite stations for semi-nostalgic weirdness, The RFD Network, rural television. Stops here always elicit a groan from Susan, especially during The Big Joe Polka Show, which is a mind-blowing excursion into 2/4 insanity…and I mean actual insanity.

Tonight was different, with a 1976(?) episode of Pop Goes The Country, with Charley Pride and Gary Stewart. Stewart was awesome, playing an ancient Telecaster and singing in a wild, killer style, two songs, one of which was a big hit, “She’s Playing Single (I’m Drinking Doubles)”. We looked up Stewart on allmusic.com, to read his story. Much familiar here — too much talent, too many drugs, too much drink, and unwilling/unable to be pigeon-holed into a comfortable niche for The Music Industry. The story has a sad ending, far more Robert Quine than Hank Williams. I’ll be checking out some of his classic recordings.

I’ve also been highly hypnotized by the original, unedited, complete, and authentic Basement Tapes. These are only available as bootleg releases, and yet are some of the greatest recordings of the 20th century. The official release from 1975 somehow manages to diminish the power of the originals, mainly by adding Band material not recorded during the 1967 Woodstock basement sessions, and by later overdubbing. “Banks of the Royal Canal”, “Sign On The Cross”, the first take of “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”…and all of it, all of it is great, grand, special, magical, and essential. But if you want to hear it, you have to go across the tracks to the record store on the other side of town, proverbially. It’s worth the trip, hysterically so.

After being in a cast last month for a hairline fracture in her foot, Adele now has a broken wrist after being knocked into and over and onto by a girl she dislikes at school. She has a purple cast for three weeks. She is a trouper.
